A History of St. Basil's Academy, 1944–1973

Abstract

This paper, which is part of a larger research project on Greek American educational institutions, examines the history of St. Basil’s Academy from 1944-1973. St. Basil’s is situated on the banks of the Hudson River in the town of Garrison, New York, approximately 50 miles north of Manhattan. Operating under the auspices of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America since 1944, the purpose of St. Basil’s Academy was two-fold: to train Greek American women to serve their church communities as teachers, choir directors, and secretaries, and to serve as a home and school for Greek Orthodox children in need.
