Development and Validation of Surveys on Undergraduate Students' Perceptions of and Experiences With Exemplars

Abstract

Exemplar use is rising in online and face-to-face undergraduate classrooms without instruments to help scholars understand student perspectives and experiences with them. Here, we present the development and validation of two survey instruments for use in a subsequent pan-university study of exemplars. From 102 participants, we offer an empirical scale development and a validation interpretation of a pilot student perception and experience inventory with content and construct validity checks. After a PCA analysis, four factors were extracted and renamed. Findings are that our learner perceptions of exemplars survey items have good construct validity and reliability, and after extracting five factors from the learner experience survey items, we present two new instruments for measuring student experiences and perceptions of exemplar-involved learning.
