Mentorship and Coaching's Impact on Candidates' Leadership Development During Self-Assessment During a Principal Preparation Program

Abstract

Principal preparation programs’ impact on principal effectiveness has received increased attention. However, little research investigates the development of principal candidates’ leadership during programs. This mixed-methods project follows a cohort of principal candidates through a novel principal preparation program which was collaboratively designed with a large urban district, a statewide practitioner organization, and a public university to meet the needs of the district. Through surveys and interviews, the role of mentorship and coaching—key features of the new program—were examined to identify their impacts on the development of principal candidates’ leadership skills and knowledge. We find that principal candidates’ leadership self-assessment grows throughout the program. There is evidence that this is driven in part by the mentorship and coaching received.
