Scaled-Up Professional Development: The Impact of an Intelligent, Interactive Online Program on Instruction

Abstract

One of the biggest challenges for professional development programs is to scale up the benefits of expert human facilitators for all teachers regardless of their location and schedule constraints. To overcome these challenges, we developed an asynchronous online PD based on intelligent tutoring system. We analyzed classroom artifacts as a proxy of instructional quality using objective measures. Our findings suggest that teachers who participated in our PD show a significantly higher level of coherency of academic rigor in their planning, implementation, and interpretation of student work aligned with the goal of the lesson compared to business-as-usual group. These findings point to the role of one-to-one interaction and just-in-time feedback features of our PD to make an impact on instructional practices.
