Black Youth Leaving Care: Preliminary Results

Abstract

The Black Youth Leaving Care (BYLC) study uses participatory visual methods to explore the contexts of them leaving care, and risks and protective factors for successfully transitioning out of care. The primary research question of the study is, “How do Black youth leaving care understand the context of their leaving, and the risk and protective factors they face transitioning out of care?” The study aims to: 1) Understand the goals and aspirations of BYLC transitioning out of care; 2) Understand individual, structural, and systemic barriers (risks) for educational trajectories in elementary, secondary and higher education; 3) Understand individual and community strengths (protective factors) for for educational trajectories in elementary, secondary and higher education.
