Composing Teorías: Latina Girls Cultivating Their Worlds Through Art and Writing

Abstract

I center on the voices of Yazmin, Valeria, Guadalupe, and Monet, four Latina girls participating in Program Name. These escritoras created art and composed personal stories that addressed the tensions they navigated as Latina girls at the intersections of gender, languages, and cultures. Girls wrote toward the foundation their mothers had laid for them through their hopes and dreams. Girls drew on creative acts to examine their lives, reclaiming their experiences by rewriting narratives of self. Theorizing the future, girls construct a world for themselves rooted in the histories of their ancestors. Their words provide teorías into how we design classrooms and literacy curriculum that centers on their cultural and gendered experiences as important resources for teaching and learning.
