On Racism and Its Educational Implications on Black, Indigenous, and People of Color Youth: Exploring Connections and Offering Solutions

Abstract

Racist and/or discriminatory experiences within educational settings, directly impact minoritized youth psychologically, emotionally and academically. This paper presents a study that examines the potential factors/effects related to high frequency of exposure to school-based racial and ethnic microaggressions, including: the absence of teacher cultural competence, problematic school disciplinary structures, everyday discrimination. We interrogate the race-related stress and mental health impacts associated with these experiences. A school counselor, neuroscientist, and researcher of culture and education present the study data, neuroscientific rationale and implications of/for engaging in the study and practical approaches to disrupting systemic structures that are at the root of racist and/or discriminatory practices that negatively impact youth.
