Abstract

HBCUs successfully and consistently graduate Black students and support them in entering the workforce, and as such they should be referenced as a model for sustained success for Black alumni. Drawing from the qualitative data of a larger mixed-methods study, this paper uses Yosso’s Community Cultural Wealth framework to analyze 40 interviews from HBCU alumni. The goal of this paper is to illustrate how HBCUs leverage genuine care for the holistic success of their students and deeply rooted community networks for workforce development and career success. Implications for this research include adding to the literature on HBCU socialization for success and how HBCUs maintain their community culture to sustain a broad-reaching network.
