The United States is the world leader in imprisoning people. These incarcerated people require education to function outside the prisons when they are released. This education requires funding from both the federal and state governments. Using a scoping review of literature, this paper interrogated the funding of prison education to gauge the extent to which this funding has increased or decreased over the last 20 years. Apart from the bump in funding from the federal Pell Grants program restarted in 2020 after a 20-year hiatus, this review found that funding for education for the incarcerated is in decline. Factors contributing to the decline in funding include the resistance from the public and politicians to fund education in prisons.
