Youth Participatory Action Research as a Pedagogical Strategy in Core Content Areas

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze overlap between the outcomes of youth participatory action research (YPAR) and K-12 learning standards in core content areas. Our motivation is to determine whether YPAR could be an effective pedagogical vehicle. This study attempts to make concrete connections between YPAR and instruction through a document analysis of learning standards in several core content areas, YPAR outcomes in the empirical literature, and overlap between the two. This analysis points to the potential spaces within formal instruction where YPAR methodologies could be inserted to improve outcomes for students, as well as their schools and communities.
