DisCrit Culture Circles: Interrupting Racism and Ableism in Teacher Education

Abstract

DisCrit Classroom Ecology paved an important path for teacher education, giving teacher educators and teacher candidates (TCs) the theoretical foundation and tools to enact anti-racist and anti-ableist teaching. Much of the existing research has focused on nondisabled teacher candidates, illustrating a need for future research to center the experiences of disabled teacher candidates. Using DisCrit Classroom Ecology and culture circles (Souto-Manning, 2010) as the method in which to engage disabled teacher candidates, we have aim to understand how disabled identities inform TCs understandings of DisCrit Classroom Ecology and how disabled candidates cultivate resistance strategies.
