Exploration of Urban School Board Members Perspectives on Equity

Thu, April 13, 9:50 to 11:20am CDT (9:50 to 11:20am CDT), Fairmont Chicago Millennium Park, Floor: B2 Level, Imperial Ballroom

Abstract

The death of George Floyd elevated to the national discourse systemic and structural racism and equity in education. This study explored equity from the perspective of urban school board members. Given the hyper-politicization of race, racism, social justice, and equity in schools, phenomenological exploration of how this set of policy actors understand and make meaning of equity can be instructive. Three themes emerged from the data: Equity Trumps, Deficient Professional Development, and Undaunted Equity Advocates.
