A Typology of School Opportunities for Family Engagement

Abstract

Research has shown the many ways in which families can be engaged in their children’s educational experiences and how schools can support this engagement (Epstein, 1995; Epstein et al., 2019; Hoover-Dempsey et al., 2005; Walker et al., 2005). However, family engagement research often analyzes individual-level factors using a variable-centered approach. In this exploratory paper, I use data from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Kindergarten Class of 2010-11 to examine school-level family engagement practices using a person-centered approach (i.e., examining similarities in patterns of responses over many variables). The latent profile analysis revealed four profiles of school opportunities for FE: low opportunities for FE, mediocre opportunities for FE, high opportunities for school-based FE, and high opportunities for FE outreach.
