This study compared the effects of individual learning supported by scaffolding and the collaborative learning supported by the script in one online English learning platform. 26,191 learners from 103 countries engaged in learning English under three different conditions: individual learning, collaborative learning, and both methods. Learners received method-specific support, such as individual scaffolding or computer-based collaborative learning scripts, depending on the learning method engaged in by the student. The results revealed that all three learning methods greatly enhanced students’ English skills, but learners who had the chance to learn collaboratively had significantly better performance in English than those who engaged in individual learning and both methods combined.
