Identifying STEM Community Assets Through Collaborative Cartography: A Co-Discovery Experience in a Rural Meatpacking Town

Abstract

Many youth in rural communities are forced to inhabit oppressive places where the lines of the maps they are shown at school are also representations of their exclusion. The low representation of communities of color and first-generation students from rural communities in STEM requires place-based approaches that can support communities to understand the inequalities, differences and power relations that explain their exclusion. In this study, we engage teachers and students in a collaborative cartography to identify community assets that could support the development of third spaces where all forms of knowledge can be centered and appreciated.
