Understanding Preschool Families' Exclusionary Experiences

Abstract

Thousands of children are expelled each year from preschool, denying them critical academic and social preparation. The overarching goal of this study was to better understand who faced a planned transition, forced exclusion, or coerced withdrawal amongst:1) families with typically developing children; 2) families whose child has a diagnosis or a suspected disability, and; 3) families of children who are in the Illinois foster care families and describe the type of support they received. Our findings suggest that our sample predominately experienced a forced exclusion. Findings from this study further reveal the lack of ability for early childhood programs to collaborate with families to retain children or develop a planned transition despite it being the law.
