Abstract

“How are you? Fine.” is part of a routine done by an early childhood educator, where the teacher starts the day by asking students “how are you” and the students reply by saying “fine.” The intent of the routine is to help Spanish-speaking students learn a second language (English). A teacher that engaged in an autocritica, a self-critique of their own praxis, emerged from this simple routine to identify marginalizing practices and engage in resistance. The teacher was not satisfied with a one-word answer to gauge how the students felt as they entered the classroom. Wanting (and needing) more from students the teacher engaged in a collective cartography activity to understand how students felt in various spaces in the school.
