Creating Interdisciplinary Synergies: How a University-School-Community Partnership Promotes Civic Learning Through Story and Music

Abstract

This study explores the experiences of students in a program formed through a university-school-community partnership and designed to promote civic learning through the Holocaust, story, and music. This program comes at a critical time, as those who can bear witness to the Holocaust diminishes and acts of hatred increase around the world. As teachers seek ways to combat hatred and facilitate civic learning, story-based instruction provides a powerful tool for enhancing student learning and engagement. This study shows that story, testimony, and music can facilitate student learning and promote historical empathy, helping students develop capacity to become more responsible and engaged citizens. The findings also offer insights for developing university-school-community partnerships in the humanities, social sciences, and fine arts.
