Imagining Possibilities for Black Asian Youth Solidarity Work in the Era of Black Lives Matter: A Systematic Review

Abstract

In recent years, Black and Asian American youth have reckoned with racist and xenophobic government policies, widespread uprisings resisting anti-Black racism and police violence, and spikes in attacks targeting Asians in the United States. We recognize the importance of scholarly work that spotlights opportunities to foster youth critical consciousness grounded in meaningful action towards racial justice. While there is extant literature on Black and Asian American critical consciousness development and activism, respectively, more limited are explorations of Black-Asian solidarity work. This systematic review synthesizes the scholarly literature on Black-Asian solidarity in the era of BLM, and in doing so identify sites of possibility for youth political education, critical consciousness raising, and solidarity-based activism towards dismantling systems of White supremacy.
