Ready or Not? How Teacher Candidates Are Prepared to Educate Children of Immigrant Backgrounds

Abstract

In this paper we explore how one teacher education program at a large, public university prepares its teacher candidates to educate and support students of immigrant backgrounds. Through a case study combining document analysis with interviews and surveys of teacher candidates and their instructors, we examine which topics related to migration, the developmental influences of growing up in immigrant families, immigration policies, immigration enforcement and their effects on students and families are taught in courses for pre-service teachers, what course instructors report about the inclusion of topics related to students’ immigrant backgrounds in their courses, how recent graduates perceive their preparation to teach children of immigrant backgrounds, and what additional content and experiences they would have liked from their TEP.
