Examining Scholar Practitioners as Agents for Change: Using and Generating Research to Explicate Contextualized Truth

Abstract

The Carnegie Project on the Education Doctorate (CPED) calls on EdD programs to prepare scholar practitioners able to affect change in local contexts. Scholar practitioners are education professionals who draw upon research knowledge to systematically address problems of practice (Dana, et al., 2011, p.4). The purpose of this research is for faculty in a CPED influenced EdD program to consider the ways that courses in general, and the dissertation in particular, can best meet the unique needs of our students as scholar practitioners. Drawing on analysis from 28 completed dissertations, we categorize topics of interest, research methods used, and issues in dissertation research. We also highlight ways in which this analysis informs our plans to engage in program improvement.
