Abstract

With a less welcoming STEM climate for gender minority and sexual minority students and the likely impact of climate on student persistence, understanding the effects of professional STEM societies on students is of utmost importance. Professional societies may be focused on identity or professional subject matter, and understanding the differences between the social capital afforded to students by different types of societies can be valuable to increasing fit in STEM programs as well as students persistence. Further, the impacts of professional society participation may be different for gender minority students than for gender majority sexual minority students, and finding ways to make participation equally advantageous for all students should be a goal.
