Abstract

This work explores the types of partnerships cultivated between schools and community-based organizations (CBOs) in order to provide supports meeting students’ academic needs. Drawing upon research that acknowledges the role of external intermediaries, namely community-based organizations, we build on evidence showcasing the key features of a strong partnership. Insights from organization leaders afforded us the opportunity to understand how they view their existing relationships with schools as described in two contrasting examples. However, we also discuss commonalities in what organizations consider important to foster strong partnerships. To develop a comprehensive picture of community-school partnerships, it is imperative to integrate organization leaders’ perspectives. In turn, this has implications for how future partnerships can be conceived.
