Abstract

After shifting to remote instruction as a result of COVID-19, we sought to reimagine how students ask questions in a large undergraduate course. Using a design-based research approach, we asked two driving questions to orient our design process: (1) How can we elicit more questions from more students so that more of their voices are heard? And (2) How can we, as instructors, use this elicitation to better improve our own instruction? Here, we present the design process behind the development of a novel Question Elicitation Tool that enhanced student-generated inquiry within an interdisciplinary undergraduate STEM course. Analysis of student perceptions suggested general support for the tool and an analysis of question types across the semester showed emergent demographic trends.
