Reimagining Citizenship Through Care-Based Pedagogy as a Pathway to Disrupting Biases and Nurturing Youths' Agency

Abstract

This paper shares care-based pedagogical practices embodied by young people and staff members at an alternative-to-detention (ATD) afterschool program. The staff’s use of care-based pedagogical approaches invited the program youth to reimagine the support they need for their wellbeing. The invitation for the youth to initiate workshops and take roles as peer-mentor nurtured them to reimagine citizenship as a notion beyond national status to that of a philosophical stance in addressing inequalities. Through this shift, the program youth disseminated their research—civic projects addressing violence and discrimination against young men and women of color in schools, institutions, and online platforms—across social media platforms and invited their social networks to join them in co-constructing changes in practices in schools and in neighborhoods.
