A Closer Look Into Classroom Analytics: Unfolding Instructors' Dashboard Use and Sense-Making Processes

Thu, April 13, 8:00 to 9:30am CDT (8:00 to 9:30am CDT), Chicago Marriott Downtown Magnificent Mile, Floor: 6th Floor, Indiana

Abstract

There is growing research about the use of automated feedback dashboards that display classroom analytics. However, little is known about the detailed processes through which instructors use and make sense of these technology tools and their impact on their teaching practices. The overarching goal of this research was to investigate instructors’ teaching beliefs and pedagogical practices as well as their use and sensemaking processes of the classroom analytics data displayed on instructors’ dashboard. This research is conducted in the context of TEACHActive, an automated observation and feedback system with pedagogical training on active learning training. A grounded theory was used to identify categories related to instructors’ perceptions. Results of instructors’ teaching beliefs, pedagogical practices and sensemaking processes are reported.
