Interrogating Organizational Structures of Antiblackness in U.S. Doctoral Socialization

Abstract

This critical qualitative study interrogates anti-Blackness in academia through interwoven network narratives across 34 Black doctoral students at 12 top-tier, public and private, U.S. historically white institutions (HWIs). Network narratives is an innovative methodology combining social network visualizations (affect exchanges) and critical narrative inquiry (game metaphor) to illuminate the multi-level organizational structures of anti-Blackness in academia. Findings narrate how Black doctoral students—positioned as knowledge workers in the field of education—enter into racialized contractual relationships with their academic institutions that contain hidden mechanisms by which Black being, doing, and thinking are sanctioned, surveilled, and silenced.
