Belonging in STEM: Latinx/Hispanic Students After Graduation From an Undergraduate Research Program

Abstract

Despite recent efforts to broaden the participation of Hispanic/Latinx students in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medical (STEMM) fields, they continue to be underrepresented in those fields. In this study, we examine the lived experiences after graduation of 19 Hispanic/Latinx students that graduated from an undergraduate research program at a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI). Whether they are in graduate school or in the industry, it is essential to examine their experiences in a field where they would likely be a minority. Students that moved away from home experienced more feelings of isolations which sometimes made them doubt their sense of belonging. This was true whether they were in graduate school or industry. Implications for undergraduate research programs will be provided.
