Abstract

Students with disabilities are disproportionately represented in the school-to-prison pipeline. This study examined publicly available data from the California Department of Education to assess rate of English Language Arts (ELA) and Math proficiency for the state overall and for students in Juvenile Court Schools. Slightly less than half of all students in the state met ELA proficiency and only a third met Math proficiency. Rates of disabled students in Juvenile Court Schools were almost three times the rate of disabled students in regular public schools. Disabled students in the Juvenile Court Schools had the lowest proficiency rates overall. Planned analyses of deidentified data from partner counties will investigate the compounded risk for minoritized status and experiences of adversity.
