Sun, April 16, 9:50 to 11:20am CDT (9:50 to 11:20am CDT), Hyatt Regency Chicago, Floor: East Tower - Exhibit Level, Riverside West Exhibition Hall

Abstract

This single, qualitative case study, which included observations, interviews, focus groups, and document reviews explored how, if at all, the career and technical education (CTE) services and support in one alternative school promote resilience and job readiness among emerging adult Black men in reentry. Work readiness training, internships, and job search and placement assistance emerged as meaningful CTE services and support that facilitate resilience and job readiness among emerging adult Black men in reentry. While working and going to school simultaneously posed challenges to school engagement, the findings highlight the important promotive and protective role strength-based alternative schools can play in promoting positive educational and employment-related experiences and outcomes among emerging adult Black men in reentry.
