Assessing a Comprehensive School Reform in Pursuit of Student Success in Math, English, and Science Performance

Abstract

This study examines the implementation and impact of the Kansans Can School Redesign Project (Kansans Can) reform on Grade 8 students’ Math, English, and Science achievement and high school graduation rate. At the time of this writing, approximately 194 schools in 71 districts in Kansas have become part of the initiative. The authors used school report cards between 2016 to 2021 from the Kansas State Department of Education’s School Achievement data, the Graduation Rate, and the National Center for Education Statistics Common Core data. Using the Difference-in-Differences method, the authors found that the Kansans Can School Redesign Project increased eighth-grade students’ science achievement significantly. The findings and discussions may provide promising evidence for future school reforms and school districts.
