With increased acceptance that equity and cultural responsiveness are precepts for effective school leadership (Ishimaru & Galloway, 2021), educational leadership scholars have asserted that school leaders need to view educational inequities ecologically in order to respond to them practically to sustain deep student learning (Khalifa, 2018). This implication has prompted professional learning standards and supports for school leaders to include explicit commitments to equity and cultural responsiveness (PSEL Standard 3; National Policy Board for Educational Administration [NPBEA], 2015). The purpose of this review is two-fold: (1) to update the strong research base supporting Standard 3 from NPBEA’s 2015 PSEL standards and (2) to highlight recent research investigating how school leaders apply equity and cultural responsiveness to their leadership practices.
