Centering Goals and Trust: Building a Responsive Approach to Undergraduate Course Evaluation

Abstract

Project-based learning (PBL) in undergraduate courses are still quite novel, and adequately evaluating them with tailored end-of-course evaluations (EOC) is critical to understanding their efficacy. The University of Houston Data & Society minor program employs project-based learning courses where students develop projects based on core concepts. We developed a multidimensional evaluation of student goal setting, instructor-student trust, and project evaluation. This evaluation was joint and aligned with Community Health Worker (CHW) certification courses and student-led service projects as part of a broader evaluation of project-based programs. This presentation will focus on the goal setting and trust components of the evaluation. Ascertaining student expectations, goals, and trust allows researchers to gain insight into the contributing factors of student success.
