Between Anti-Asian Violence and Antiblack Racism: The Racial, Social-Political Literacies of Southeast Asian American Youths

Abstract

Throughout the pandemic, our communities have witnessed heightened anti-Asian violence coverage in the media and increased attention on Asian American in education. Despite these coverages, little remains known about Southeast Asian American (SEAA) youth—how they are affected by the socio-political and racial discourses involving Asian Americans, as well as by incidents of anti-Asian violence and anti-Black racism. In this critical ethnographic study, we examine what SEAA youth share about their racial/socio-political realities/identities as “Asian Americans”—in relation to broader Asian American communities and Black and non-Black communities of Color—when they engage in a counterstorytelling workshop series. Through multimodal deconstructed zines, they underscore the influences of family/parents/peers in cultivating their racial literacies about anti-Asian violence and anti-Black racism.
