Abstract

This study examines the teaching experiences of Black Teachers of English (BTE) through storying Black joy as an instructional stance. By centering the teaching experiences of BTE, this study contributes to the limited research on the experiences of Black teachers of literature, writing, and discourse. Black affect theory, portraiture, and Critical Race Theory in English Education were employed in this study to form the theoretical framing of the narratives of three Black Teachers of English and their experiences as English instructors, graduate students, and architects of Black joy-making. The findings suggest further study on the experiences of BTE and research on instructional practices which center Black joy in the teaching of literature, writing, and discourse.
