The doctoral Writing Process Questionnaire (WPQ), consisting of six subscales (blocks, perfectionism, procrastination, innate ability, knowledge transforming, productivity) was developed in Finland to understand doctoral students’ writing experiences that may affect persistence and retention. The purpose of this study was to validate the WPQ in a US university, examine whether multimodal writing, which has shown promise as a meaningful construct along with the WPQ subscales, contributes theoretical depth to the scale, and establish whether the scale with multimodality shows significant links to well-being. Results from analyses with 107 doctoral students at a Hispanic-Serving Institution suggest variations to the original WPQ structure and utility in the multimodal writing scale, with a multimodal approach to writing linked to lower academic strain.
