Abstract

Motivated by exploring pedagogical approaches to promote transformational learning among college students, this embedded case study explored the transformative role of photovoice pedagogy in an undergraduate developmental psychology course. Photovoice pedagogy utilizes photography to increase learners’ academic engagement and critical awareness. A total of 46 participants completed quantitative surveys showing high levels of transformative experience and transformative learning. A subsequent sample of 11 participants completed photovoice interviews. Three themes emerged from interview data illustrating the processes and the outcomes of transformational learning which included: (a) a challenging way of learning, (b) transformative engagement, and (c) personal transformation. Results indicate photovoice pedagogy is a promising transformative tool. Further implications of the study are discussed.

Keywords: photovoice pedagogy, personal transformation, transformative learning
