A Critical Qualitative Study of How College Student Leaders of Color Conceptualize Social Justice Leadership

Abstract

Leadership has been a crucial learning outcome for undergraduate students, but it was not until recently when researchers called for reexamining college student leadership using critical perspectives. Under the current U.S. context where longstanding racism remains pervasive in harming communities of color, there is a pressing need for more social justice leaders to address inequity issues. However, there remains limited empirical scholarship studying social justice leadership development especially among students of color. Relatedly, little is known about how students of color conceptualize social justice leadership. This study applies critical qualitative methodology to understand college student leaders of color’s perception of social justice leadership. The research question is: How do college student leaders of color conceptualize social justice leadership?
