Now Let's Get in Formation: Toward Black Girlhood Studies Pedagogies — A Systematic Literature Review

Abstract

This paper carries out a systematic literature review of course syllabi for university level courses of Black girlhood studies. Black girlhood studies as an interdisciplinary field of study continues to garner more public attention. The radical act of spatial creation in teaching and mentoring in Black girlhood centers a potentiality for the (re)imagination of Black girls' futures (Brown, 2013; Cahill, 2021), without interruption to thrive boundless. This paper analyzes 28 university-level Black girlhood studies courses to inform conceptualizations of pedagogies of Black girlhood. The purpose of this study is to critically review current courses in Black girlhood for themes to design and inform Black girlhood studies curricula. Findings inform perspectives for teaching Black girlhood in the academy and beyond.
