Best Practices in the Multicultural Supervision of International Counseling Students

Abstract

International students have been and continue to be a significant population affecting the United States. Over the past few decades, substantial scholarly attention has been paid to the lack of international student training in the counseling profession. The purposes of this conceptual article were to 1) examine international students’ experiences in training and supervision and 2) suggest how counselor educators in programs accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) should integrate the multicultural competencies. Recommendations for counselor educators to go beyond the minimal CACREP Standards for preparing students to provide culturally competent services for the international student population are offered. Implications for future research are also provided.
