Naming the In-Between of Black Girl Truths Using A/r/tography

Abstract

The educational spaces historically and contemporarily available to Black girls that support and encourage their processes of truth-telling have been, and continue to be severely limited (Brown, 2013). To emphasize the value of employing creative methods in educative spaces in pursuit of individual and collective expressions of truth, we explore a creative mask art project conducted during a Young Adult (YA) book club in Central New York. We use Black Girl Cartography as a framework to highlight the importance of arts-based research in education broadly. Within this framework, we assert Black girlhood as an on-going practice of truth-seeking/telling supported by arts-based methods, as well as an active resistance of the social structures that make this “truth telling” space irrefutably essential.
