Factors Relating to Negative Research Impacts Among University Faculty During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to identify key factors that influence perceived COVID-19 danger and negative research impacts during the COVID-19 pandemic. Utilizing a mixed method research design, STEM faculty were recruited for 12 focus groups (n = 72) and a cross-sectional survey (n = 611). Five themes; dependent status, marital status, gender, field of study, and tenure status, were key factors that related to negative research impact and perceived danger. Findings from the quantitative analysis showed that women and those in social sciences reported higher perceived COVID-19 danger. Faculty supporting dependents, working in social science and physical lab science, and on tenure track but not tenured have reported the highest levels of negative research impact.
