A Deeper Look at Co-Teaching: The Case for Student Teaching and English Learners

Abstract

In response to change in policies in Teacher Education in New Jersey, we describe two initiatives that exemplify how the university can provide alternative field experiences for student teachers and how school districts can develop applied professional development for in-service teachers. The two cases involve the use of co-teaching: co-teaching as student teaching, and co-teaching as professional development for the inclusion of English learners. By implementing co-teaching to replace the traditional student teaching experience and PD that focuses on bringing together the ESL and the content area teachers, we aim at developing practice-based approaches that address the needs of the growing culturally and linguistically diverse student population and improves teaching and learning.
