Abstract

This study explored the essential constructs of blended learning (BL) models by conducting an inductive grounded theory analysis on 68 K-12 BL programs in China. Results show that practical purpose, connective agent and flexible structure are fundamental components of every BL model. Accordingly, a Purpose-Agent-Structure (PAS) framework was proposed as a solution to construct BL models from a perspective of adaptability. Based on the PAS framework, six typical BL models in China were identified, including Mobile Blend, Synchronous Blend, Rich-media Blend, Data-driven Blend, Cooperative Blend, and Extended Blend. They not only verified and supplemented the existing BL models, but also provide useful implications for educators in selecting, designing and implementing appropriate BL models.
