This qualitative study draws from Critical Utopian Action Research to include participants—teachers, directors, and coaches—in an examination of the severe shortage of teachers in early childhood education and care centers. Data collection methods included online discussion forums, targeted interviews, and focus group discussions, and analysis drew from the iterative methods of grounded theory. Findings suggest that the repercussive and burdensome nature of the staffing crisis has led to critically low morale amongst teachers, and recommendations point to the need for both cultural shifts within centers and communities and improved coaching, training, and professional development opportunities for educators.
