Abstract

To understand the current research landscape and implementation of computing education in elementary settings, this study systematically reviewed 37 empirical studies. The findings revealed three major research areas examined in the current literature: 1) Curriculum and lesson development; 2) Tool exploration and learning environment design; 3) Computing pedagogy development. The current instructional interventions address knowledge and skills in six domains, among which promoting computational thinking is a major domain of computing instruction. The current instructional interventions took different forms and a variety of learning activities were utilized to promote elementary students’ computing experience. This study provided important implications for future research and instructional guidance for designing age-appropriate computing experience for elementary, research gaps were also identified to guide future research.
