Ethical Frameworks in K–12 Education: Freire and the Dichotomy Between Political Posturing and Professional Aspiration

Since January 2021, 42 states have moved to limit how teachers can address sexism and racism, with 17 state legislatures encoding these strictures in legislation (Map, 2022). This emerging study seeks to describe prevailing themes regarding the ethical expectations and limitations of school leaders across states through the lenses of professional codes of educator ethics. The study applies multiple ethical paradigms (Shapiro & Stefcovich, 2011) informed by the concept of conscientization described by Freire (2000) to contextualize significant ethical problems facing U.S. schools awash in polarization.
