Mixed-Methods Approach to Temperament and Peer Engagement: Cultural Insights With Asian Indian American Preschoolers

Thu, April 13, 8:00 to 9:30am CDT (8:00 to 9:30am CDT), Fairmont Chicago Millennium Park, Floor: 2nd Level, Gold Room

Abstract

This study uses a mixed methods research design to explore the differences in temperamental traits between Asian Indian American (AIA) preschool children and children of other ethnicities, and how their home culture affects that process. Temperament data was collected using teacher- and parent-reported Child Behavior Questionnaires, and peer engagement data was collected using the Qualitative Observation Tool for all children in the sample. Findings show cultural differences in how parents versus teachers perceive negative affect, the effect of language barriers, and the effect of the pandemic. The ultimate goal of this study is to help teachers create opportunities for peer engagement for children who face challenges in academic or social settings, and identify effective supports for such children.
