Teacher Education for Students With Refugee Experiences: A Literature Exploration

Abstract

Teachers and teacher educators are becoming more aware of the challenges of supporting students with refugee experiences in an inequitable and unjust schooling system. The literature shows that although the education of refugee students is a current interest of many scholars, taking a critical stance on the resettlement experience is rare. Further, although the studies reviewed in refugee education call for more research on teacher training and professional development, few studies within the teacher education research field approach this population as the primary focus of study (Kovinthan Levi, 2019). Critically reading the research surfaced the importance of not sanitizing or erasing the experiences of misconceptions, negative attitudes, discrimination, and racism that was faced by refugee students.
