Abstract

An empirical analysis of Korean 8th graders was conducted using the Trends in Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) 2003-2019 to examine how educational expansion brought about changes in the association between family socioeconomic status and educational aspirations. In the context of the rapid expansion of higher education since early 2000, the proportion of Korean students who had a plan for undergraduate and graduate education decreased during the last two decades. However, the positive association between family background and educational aspirations tended to strengthen during the same period. With this result, implications were addressed regarding educational inequalities in the context of worldwide higher education expansion.
